5 Reasons Why Midwives Recommend Cooling After Childbirth ❄️
You’re thinking about childbirth… but have you thought about recovery after?
After a vaginal birth, it’s common to experience pain, swelling, and tenderness down there. That’s why midwives recommend cooling: it provides instant soothing relief and helps support faster healing.

Why cooling is a must in your postpartum week
After a vaginal birth, the perineal area is often swollen, sensitive, or even damaged
by small tears or stitches. Here is why postpartum professionals recommend
cooling:
1. Immediate pain relief (without medication)
Cold temperatures temporarily numb the nerves in the vaginal area. This
provides immediate relief from sharp pain, especially when sitting, walking, or during those first few trips to the bathroom.
2. Reducing swelling
Birth puts a lot of pressure on your tissue. Cold therapy causes blood
vessels to constrict (vasoconstriction), which helps swelling subside faster. Less swelling means less tension on any stitches you may have.
3. Speeding up natural recovery
By calming inflammatory responses in the tissue, your body gets the rest it needs to heal. Postpartum caregivers find that mothers who cool consistently (but in moderation) regain their mobility much sooner.
4. Hygiene and postpartum bleeding
Unlike 'DIY solutions' such as frozen maternity pads (which can leak and be unhygienic), the Cool Couchie pad combines cooling with maximum absorption. This allows you to manage postpartum bleeding (including large clots) while simultaneously cooling the area.
5. Optimal comfort during the 555 rule.
The well-known 5-5-5 rule suggests: 5 days in bed, 5 days on the bed, and 5 days around the bed. Cooling is most effective during these periods of rest, making those first few days on the sofa or in bed significantly more comfortable.
“I’ve often seen the Cool Couchie pads used by the families I care for, and I’m a big fan. They stay cool for a long time and feel soft and comfortable on the sensitive vaginal area after birth.”

How to activate the Cool Couchie pad
- Even Out the Pearls: While the pad is still inside its sleeve, gently massage it to distribute the cooling pearls evenly throughout. They may have shifted during shipping, making one end look thicker than the other.
- Fold to Pop: Keeping the pad in the sleeve, fold it in half from top to bottom. Press gently along the fold until you hear a "pop" — this activates the cooling effect.
- Shake It Up: With the pad still in the sleeve, give it a gentle shake to help the cooling fully kick in.
- Unwrap & Apply: Tear open the sleeve and remove the pad. Peel off the paper backing to reveal the adhesive. Place the pad inside your underwear, and you're good to go.
IT'S BEEN PROVEN:
WE WON'T LEAVE YOU BURNING!
The application of the cold gel pad to the perineum relieved perineal pain and increased postpartum comfort in all the women. The pain felt by the women during the recovery and the daily activities decreased. Postpartum perineal pain adversely affected daily activities such as lying down, sitting, and walking; infant care, breastfeeding, and urination; and comfort levels of the postpartum women.
